Moving to a new place comes with its share of challenges, and getting your driver’s license in Abu Dhabi might feel like one of them. But don’t worry—you’ve got this! I’ve broken the process into clear, easy-to-follow steps so you can feel confident every step of the way. With a little preparation (and maybe a deep breath), you’ll have your license in no time.
Before You Head Out: Prepare for Success
1. Take out 200 AED in cash
You’ll need this for the translation service. The fee was 160 AED when I did it, but having a little extra on hand is always a good idea.
2. Download and register on the TAMM app
This app will guide you through payments and notifications during the process. Download it from your app store and set up your account before you start—it’s quick and makes the process much smoother.
3. Important Note: If your Emirates ID (EID) is not issued in Abu Dhabi, you’ll need to bring a tenancy agreement with your name on it to show proof of residence in Abu Dhabi. This is required to complete the process, so double-check your documents before heading out!
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Start at the AD Police Drivers Licensing and Traffic Department (click for Google Map directions)
Using the map above, head to Building A (the main building). Bring:
- Your original driver’s license from your home country.
- Your Emirates ID (EID).
Step 2: Take the Eye Test
At the eye test office, you’ll complete a quick check.
Step 3: Get Your License Translated
Next, walk across to Building B, which has several smaller offices.
Return to Building A and wait for a notification on your TAMM app. This notification will prompt you to pay 600 AED.
Step 5: Let Them Know You’re Ready
Head to the large main desk in Building [A] and let the staff know you’ve paid and are ready to pick up your license. They’ll give you a counter number to finalize the process.
